Remodeling Ideas

Posted by Jimmy Johnson

by Jimmy Johnson

You may love your home to bits, but there may come a time when you want something new. This is only human nature, and rather than moving, most people opt for finding remodeling ideas to make their homes a little more modern or perhaps just different enough for they feel like everything is new. If you look around at the amount of home interior and home-improvement stores there are today, you will realize that this is a pretty common practice among many people.

Even if your remodelling budget is pretty tight, you should be able to at least afford some paint and maybe some new blinds for your room, and this alone can drastically change the way a room looks. Pick up a few neat pieces of furniture or artwork at thrift stores or garage sales and the transformation is complete. When you are checking out your home-improvement store you can use it at a starting place for ideas.

Usually when one chooses to remodel they have something already in mind, but if you are just itching to change something then you will need to find inspiration. Which room in your home do you spend the most time in, and how would you make it more inviting and comfortable? There’s a good beginning. Another popular room to remodel is the bathroom, since everyone feels more at ease in a nice bright and airy bathroom which most older homes don’t come with. Check out your local home-improvement stores if you need more inspiration, or head to a fabric store if you are looking for color ideas.

Looking online is also a great place to find ideas. You can check out this year’s trends in colors and textures as well as see what others have done with similar spaces. Check out pictures of remodelling sites and also get step-by-step instruction on how to undergo a certain project. You may like someone’s new space so much that you’ll want to copy it, or just take aspects of it for your home.

The best thing about remodeling ideas is that they are flexible. Once you are halfway through your project you may find yourself going in a different direction, and that is perfectly fine. It is after all, your house. You may even find that you want to share your ideas with others, and if you are really good at it, you may have a whole new career in front of you.

Victorian Design Floors Were Well Kept

Posted by Carter Dutchen

by Carter Dutchen

Once you’ve been exposed to Victorian interior design you’ll find it is very distinctive and really pretty hard to miss. It has a unique look and sense, and you’ll find yourself returning to its charm time and again. We’ve all seen the quality image of the woman dressed in eighteen hundreds fashion with her parasol as her someone special assists her into a small rowboat for an afternoon on the lake. This Victorian interior design model is exceedingly popular particularly in the New England U S. There are a number of key elements involved with this interior plan. You’ll need to stay with these if you want true Victorian ambiance.

History
The Victorian era began in England, it is more often than not attached to the reign of Queen Victoria, and meaning why the label Victorian is placed on this particular model, the original era was from 1837 to 1901. Queen Victoria was the longest reigning monarch in England until recently and the time of her rule is remembered fondly because, not only was it a period of unmatched peace, but it was also a time of moving advancement as the industrial revolution had begun. Great fortunes were being made.

The general positive feeling of the period is something that people look at in a very positive light and even those people that never lived during that period find joy and happiness in images from that period. The architecture of the day was grand, and Victorian interior design would more or less think of as clutter today. However, it lives on and is preferred by people all over the world.

Stick It on Your Wall
A characteristic of this Victorian interior is wallpaper. Wall covering has been with us since the Romans, but it was becoming the wall covering, we know today at about the time of the Victorian period. People of means would use wallpaper as a statement that indicated that they could afford to paper their walls in these beautiful colors.

Wallpaper became a class symbol, and so it was a standard to be used in any interior design during the Victorian era. Should you be restoring or simply decorating your home in the Victorian motif, you will be including wallpaper. Should you not be a huge devote of wallpaper you’re most likely not a true Victorian interior design person, and you likely may only wish to think about accumulating Victorian period furnishings .

The Victorian design floors were usually well kept. They are also very beautiful. They are hard wood with ornamental throw rugs on them. Wall to wall carpeting is not very Victorian. If you have wall to wall carpeting, changing to hard wood flooring aught to be the first order of business. Picture frames are circular for some reason, and are associated with the Victorian look, although the idea of circular picture frames has been around for centuries. Overall, a Victorian look is about having wealth in the 1800’s and while it can be a much-cluttered theme, it can be very beautiful.

Castle Shower Curtains

Posted by Candy Crane

by Candy Crane

Homes vary greatly. There are big homes and small homes. There are homes with swimming pools and homes with bowling allies and a dance floor. However, one thing that all homes share in common, no matter how extravagant or how basic the home may be, is a bathroom. Most modern day homes will have a bathroom. And most homes will have at least one shower. Even if a person lives in a castle, shower curtains remain a necessity.

Castle shower curtains? This phrase does sound a bit odd but they do exist. Of course, when castles were popular during the Middle Ages, shower curtains weren’t an integral part of the bathroom experience (that pretty much consisted of a quick sponge bath). But today, there are modern castles. That is, there are castles in England and Scotland, and many other parts of the world that have been renovated with all the modern amenities one would expect in any home, including of course showers, and the requisite shower curtains. Many of today’s modern castles are either owned privately, or are visited by tourists.

For the tourist castle, a tour is usually offered, and sometimes tea or lunch. However, if one’s dream has been to spend a night or two in a medieval castle, this is possible.

There are castles all over the world, especially in some places one would not expect to find them, like Spain, Austria, and even the United States. They can be found from Maine to California. However, Europe definitely has a better selection. Ireland has structures that were built in the 15th century. That kind of history unfortunately cannot be found in the United States.

One of the most scenic castles in the world is located in Scotland, on the Isle of Mull. Although not as old as some of the other castles in Europe, Glengorm overlooks the Atlantic and has a view that is absolutely stunning. Despite the mystic allure of castles, the castle shower curtains are a reminder that no matter how fancy or grand a home may be, at the end of the day, all homes serve the same purpose. And showering is one of those tasks that we all have to take care of every once in a while.

A Bright Idea For The Cooking Area!

Posted by Ned D'Agostino

by Ned Dagostino

One of the more important rooms in your house is the kitchen. That’s where you prepare your food. You should be able to have a clear view of the food preparation. Insufficient lighting makes that quite difficult.

More often than not, the kitchen is not properly illuminated. Ceiling lights are often obstructed by the overhang of the cabinets over the cooking counter. Consequently the actual cooking area is comparatively dark.

Your kitchen needs to be cheery and bright. Otherwise cooking will be a drag. Modern kitchen furniture has recognized this fact by manufacturing cabinet units which have recessed lighting fixtures. Leaf through a kitchen furniture catalog for ideas so that you can renovate the kitchen with these ready made articles.

Maybe you’re good at ‘house improvement’ yourself. Or your spouse is. Anyway, it’s a good, clean, easy and fun project! You may want to play safe and get a regular electrical contractor in to do the wiring.

Fresh wiring is a costly affair. You can try out alternative lighting systems which are readily available. Way lighting especially designed for children’s rooms is an ideal solution. These are battery-operated and require no wiring. All you need to do is to pull off the backing strip and press-fit these dinky devices against the lower surface of the cabinets over the kitchen counter. When you need them, just give them a tap and they’re on. Another tap makes them go off! They are the least expensive lighting system on the market.

You don’t have to worry too much about the appearance of the under cabinet lighting units. The factory fitted ones come in recessed mounts. Even if you mount them on the bottom surface of the cabinet, they’re not going to be visible to the casual observer. But you will notice the light they shed!

If you usually send out for your meals then putting up these lights is not a top-priority project for you. But if you do like to cook and do spend a lot of time in the kitchen, then you will really appreciate the extra light. To keep the project budget down to the bare minimum you should try the touch lights described above.

People who put up these additional lights as described in this article are so pleased with it, that they have started using the same idea in other areas of the house. So put this down on your ‘To Do’ list now and see the light!

Search For The Right Interior Design School

Posted by Chad Dethelo

by Chad Dethelo

After some consideration, you may have begun to understand the potential in the interior design business. Yes, you may have always dreamed of starting your own interior design company. You should though, consider a few things prior to beginning your venture. Are you already a creative artist, or do you at present only try to redesign the interior of homes for friends and family? One of those items will be the beginning of your search for the right interior design school. There are several different types of schools for this training. You have to decide which one is going to offer you the best training in order to work in the design field. Essentially, do you have the drive to succeed or do you just want a paycheck?

If you’re already employed fulltime in another field , you will want to find a choice of schools to select from that offer flexible class schedules. Are you going to be able to work around your job? Consider your coming homework assignments, be they color matching or creating a window covering, carefully and how it will affect your day job. Then there is your employment schedule and your possibly rusty study habits. Considering all of this, you will want to find the right design school that is close to you. You may have difficulty finding a balance for everything, so look for a design school which is closeby.

Considering everything, you might want to be a little innovative. What about the various design schools online? Just make sure you can locate their certification on the Internet. Attending an online school is good if potential employers will look favorably upon your educational experience. When you find a brick and mortar location, and a class schedule that suits you, you still might feel that you won’t be able to accommodate everything. Attending and online school may be an excellent way to obtain your certificate or degree and start your new life. As was said earlier, just to be certain the online school is a certified institution. One of the downside’s to online learning is that numerous prospective employers will not be happy with your educational experience because as yet many have difficulty trusting the education from an online institution. Another consideration is the various pros and cons to attending either a school structure or a virtual school.

With the brick and mortar school of design, you are stuck with their schedule. Your lesson time is as scheduled and you can’t change it or do make-ups. Think about what transportation you’ll be using. If you drive a car, is your car in good shape? Will there be adequate alternate transport for you if your car is put into the shop? Maybe there is a bus route to the school. You should know that you’ll always be able to get to class no matter what.

Most online design schools, offer you greater flexibility. You’re able to login at a suitable time. You can work on your assignments fundamentally at your convenience. The only restriction is that you participate as many times as required to get your assignments in on schedule. These arrangements are terrific for those who have commitments to family and employment.

Your decision to start your interior design business involves your family. Thoroughly discuss your intentions with your family and yes, even your acquaintances. Any decision you make will affect more people than you think. You might wish to consider those closest to you, and speak with them separately. Many times, they will cause you to think about circumstances you hadn’t yet thought of.

The Advantages of Choosing Wooden Venetian Blinds

Posted by Patrick Rogers

by James Anthony

If you are looking for a way to cover up the windows in your home then you should seriously consider purchasing some wooden venetian blinds. As well as these blinds preventing sunlight getting into the rooms in your home, you can open them to allow sunlight in and so help warm the rooms up.

There are plenty of reasons why interior designers choose to install wooden venetian blinds into their client’s home and below we take a look at just what some of these are.

1. Blinds made from wood are able to create an atmosphere which is much more warm and inviting than some other types of window dressings. But you need to make sure that you care for the correctly if you want them to last and below we explain how to do this.

2. If you want to you can match the wood of the blinds to the wood trim in your home. Plus you can also match them to the wood used in the furniture in the room giving the house a more uniformed feel.

3. Although readymade wooden Venetian blinds are great if you have windows of an unusual size then you may well have to spend more on getting some custom made blinds instead. Although they cost more, they are far more functional and you will have wider array of styles and designs to select from. Plus with custom made blinds you will able to find a color that is the same or as similar to the color of the other items made from wood you have in your home.

Above we have looked at several reasons why people decide to have wooden venetian Blinds fitted to their windows. However, once purchased if you want them to remain looking as good as when you purchased them you need to care for them properly.

It is important that you make sure that you regularly clean your blinds in order to prevent dust or dirt building up. This can be done very quickly and simply by wiping them either with a soft brush or a soft clean duster. The third way to clean wooden venetian blinds is to use your vacuum cleaner to which the brush attachment has been joined.

You can wipe the blinds down using a damp cloth but never should you immerse them fully into water. If you do eventually water will be able to break through the seal of the wooden Venetian blind slats and this will cause them to warp. So to help remove any stubborn dirt or dust from the blinds you just need to wipe over the surface of the slats with a damp cloth with some detergent on it.

Therefore if you are looking for a covering for windows on your home that provides good levels of privacy but allows sufficient sunlight into a room, you should seriously consider getting some wooden venetian blinds.

Advantages and disadvantages of types of flooring for the kitchen

Posted by Adam Peters

by Adam Peters

Considering the options available for kitchen flooring, it is advisable to know the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of flooring. This will definitely prove useful to select the best flooring for your kitchen.

The process of selecting the kitchen floor needs a bit of extra planning and thought. A lot of kitchen work like cooking and other chores are done while standing all the time, this can cause a lot of stress and pain to your legs, especially if the flooring is of a hard material like marble. So it is very important to choose flooring that will be comfortable and not one, which only matches the style and interiors of your home.

Considering the amount of time to be spent in the kitchen, that too standing and walking all the while, selecting flooring that is soft and comfortable, like vinyl or carpet flooring can definitely prove to be a good idea. But if you have selected a hard flooring to match the flooring of other rooms, using throw rugs to stand on can provide that extra cushion to your feet.

While planning the kitchen flooring, it is advisable to consider the comfort of the person using the kitchen and the amount of pressure the flooring will be subjected to. Considering the fact that liquid spills are very common in the kitchen, installing stone or marble flooring can be risky, especially if there are small children, pets or elderly people in the house. In this case opting for slip resistant flooring can be a good idea.

Practicality as well as Good Looks

Considering the nature of work being done in the kitchen, the possibility of spilling hot liquid on the kitchen floor cannot be ignored. Installing a floor with wax polish in these areas can prove to be a huge mistake as the chances of it getting damaged is very high. So when it comes to selecting floor for your kitchen, it?s advisable to opt for flooring that is heat resistant and easily washable.

Another flooring option that is gaining popularity among homeowners is the laminate flooring. It is available in a variety of designs and colors, varying from stone to wood. The installation of laminate flooring is also very easy. It is basically stain proof, and a regular sweeping and mopping is enough for cleaning the laminate flooring. The only disadvantage of laminate floors is that, liquid spills left on the floor could find its way below the floating floor and cause a lot of damage.

Flooring’s made of marble and other stones are definitely not a good choice for the kitchen. Although they are very durable and can add a lot of beauty and class to your kitchen, they can cause more damage then gain. Grouts used to seal the joints can become discolored and spoil the beauty of the whole floor. A little water on the floor surface can make it very slippery and dangerous. And the worst disadvantage is that such flooring’s are hard and are extremely uncomfortable for the ones who spend long hours standing in the kitchen.
